A vortex tube sediment extractor has been installed in Chatra Main Canal, Nepal. During the 1982 monsoon, field measurements were carried out on this tube to enable a comparison between observed values of efficiency and the values predicted by the Hydraulics Research design method. This report provides the analysis and results. The report also looks briefly at sediment problems overall in the canal, and at a combined operation strategy for two vortex tube installations.

As part of a programme of collaborative research to study sedimentation in East Java, Indonesia, reservoir surveys were undertaken in 1977 and 1982 by the Hydraulics Research Station. This report describes the methods employed during the surveys and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method. With the field experience gained it is now possible to justify the double sextant angle method of survey, used in 1982, as giving reliable results for use in sediment volume calculations. Recommendations for the use of appropriate electronic distance measuring equipment in future surveys are made. The application of programmable calculators is also recommended using programs given in this report.

This report contains details of a hydrographic survey carried out in July 1982 of Wlingi reservoir which is situated on the Brantas river, East Java, Indonesia. The survey revealed that the reservoir appears to be silting up at a rate which is five times greater than was expected at the design stage. Most of the sediment appears to be entering the reservoir from tributaries originating in valleys affected by the lava flows from the eruptions of the volcano Gunung Kelud. Debris control structures in these tributaries are thought to be almost full and consequently no longer trap sediment effectively. This is presented as the major reason for the large increase in sedimentation rates in Wlingi reservoir.

The Warujayeng-Kertosono canal has experienced siltation problems since 1951. The canal is to be rehabilitated and quantitative estimates of the sediment problem are needed. This report analyses the data gathered from surveys carried out in 1975 and 1981. The results highlight the need for sediment exclusion or extraction presently being carried out by a dredger.

A programme of research was undertaken to study the siltation of Karangkates reservoir, East Java, Republic of Indonesia. The objectives of the research are: (1) To quantify the amount of sediment deposited within the reservoir since impoundment. (2) To determine the distribution of that sediment within the reservoir basin. (3) To identify areas of significant erosion within the catchment and to measure the sediment yield from these areas to the reservoir. To provide background knowledge, data collected from various sources is presented in this report. The data includes rainfall, river flow and sediment discharge. Suggestions on how to improve and continue the data collection network are included.

This report is the result of a survey to ascertain the utilization of weirs in Ubon Province. The sites selected were in Amphur (District) Amnatcharoen, Amphur Warinchumrab and Amphur Dej-Udom. In each Amphur the weirs were randomly chosen for a total of 15 sites in order to obtain some basic data for implementing weir construction. The survey was divided into (1) study of the weir (2) interviews with villagers concerning building of the weir, utilization, maintenance and villagers' views on the weir. It was observed that most of the weirs built in those three Amphurs could store water over the dry season. Villagers use water mainly to grow vegetables, feed livestock and for fishing. During the wet season, if the rainfall is erratic, villagers pump water from the weir into rice fields. The main problems were that the crests of weirs were too low, only a small amount of water could be stored for the dry season and sedimentation occurred around the front of the weir. Most villagers prefer to have weirs with an adjustable crest. This type of weir is similar to weirs constructed for the KKU-N.Z. project.
