An alternative to the conventional forms of irrigation is described. This alternative, termed "micro-scale irrigation" already has a proven success rate with africa's farmers. This paper discusses the development of a package which addresses the needs of such farmers. Recent studies in Zimbabwe have highlighted the present role and future potential of micro-scale irrigation on dambos. Alluvial resources, although not utilized to the same extent offer similar potential. The use of human powered pumps is one method by which the potential of these shallow groundwater resources can be realized. Extension and credit are identified as critical factors. The need for planners to recognize and support this alternative is emphasised.
