The discharge of irrigation drainage water through a natural depression in the Benue valley of North Cameroon, has created a permanently flooded habitat for freshwater snails which transmit schistosomiasis. The risk of transmission of schistosomiasis for people living near this depression has considerably increased. In close cooperation and consultation with the local population the depression was reconstructed in order to destroy snail breeding sites and to use the available land and water for agriculture and fisheries. Results indicate that the availability of a manageable water supply is welcomed by the villagers, especially because it makes dry-season horticulture a more attractive and profitable endeavor. In addition the production of fish is appreciated because it provides a cheap additional source of protein for local consumption. Snail populations have dramatically decreased in numbers after the reconstruction of the depression, showing that an integrated approach to drainage problems can result in increased production while reducing health risks.

The elaboration and the utilization of runoff simulation models watershed in the urban rainwater drainage networks and the functioning of an urban basin need to know the design rain taking into account the characteristics of the local pluviometry. This article intends to propose "design rain" for the urban site of Yaounde (Cameroon), located in humid tropical zone in Africa. This site presents particular hydrologic constraints different from those of urban sites in temperate countries where models of rain have yet developed.

SESAME is the bibliographic databank of French-language literature on agricultural research and rural development, a combination of files produced by the documentation centers of various organizations who wish to encourage the exchange of published information between these organizations, and with outside agencies, and promote agronomic research work in French-speaking countries throughout the world. It is produced by CIRAD (Centre de Cooperation Internationale de recherche Agronomique pour le Developpement, (France)), INRA (Institu National de la Recherche Agronomique (France)), and ORSTOM (Institut Francais de Recherche Scientifique pour le Developpement en Cooperation (France)), in collaboration with AGROPOLIS (France), BDPA-SCETAGRI (France), CRA (Tchad), Club du Sahel de l'OCDE, FOFIFA et CIDST (Madagascar), Faculte de Gembloux (Belgique), IBISCUS (France), IRA et IRZ (Cameroun), ISRA (Senegal), RESADOC (Sahel) and Universite Laval (Canada). 2nd edition produced in 1991 has 66500 citations.

The study reviews the experience with irrigation projects in Africa with particular attention to small-scale irrigation in the Sahel. It examines the characteristics of the successful projects in order to determine the basis for future successful projectdesign. It then outlines those factors most critical to the project success, including full and early farmer participation, low cost technologies, an adequate financial return that provides a cash flow to farmers at the time that they need it, and sustainability through groundwater surveys and attention to environmental considerations.

17 Carsky, R. J.; Ndikawa, R.; Singh, L.; Rao, M. R. 1995. Response of dry season sorghum to supplemental irrigation and fertilizer N and P on vertisols in northern Cameroon. Agricultural Water Management, 28(1):1-8.

A series of trials were conducted to quantify response of dry season transplanted sorghum to water and fertilizer application in order to test the hypothesis that soil moisture limits production more than nutrient supply. The trials were conducted at two field sites representative of a large land area in the Lake Chad Basin of Africa. Water was clearly the limiting factor as grain yield response to two irrigations (10 cm total) was a statistically significant 58% over 3 years. One irrigation during vegetative growth resulted in sorghum grain yield increases of 24-29%. Response to P fertilizer was negligible. Response to N fertilizer was 32% over three environments but was not statistically significant at P<0.05. Future research should focus on improvements in soil moisture availability, either through increased soil moisture storage or through reduced evaporative losses.
