The paper presents an overview of the existing irrigation systems in Morocco with a focus on farmer managed systems. The author presents a brief history of the Moroccan irrigation systems in terms of water laws, government intervention and management organizations. The various reasons for the growing public interest in improving existing farmer managed irrigation systems together with the major problems facing intervening government agencies are reviewed. Finally, ideas for future research are presented.
