Two multiple regression models are used to relate antecedent rainfall to dry seasons flow of 14 rivers serving diversion irrigation systems in the Philippines. The first model expresses streamflow as a function of the bimonthly rainfall totals in centimeters from the preceding 8 months, and the second model relies on the two bimonthly totals most highly correlated to flow and the number of rainy days with 25 mm or more rainfall from the preceding 6 month period. The models have little difference in their predictive accuracy. Although the standard error estimate is relatively high, equations for half of the rivers studied could explain more than 60 percent of the variation in streamflow, and for some rivers over 80 percent in the second model.

A programme of research was undertaken to study the siltation of Karangkates reservoir, East Java, Republic of Indonesia. The objectives of the research are: (1) To quantify the amount of sediment deposited within the reservoir since impoundment. (2) To determine the distribution of that sediment within the reservoir basin. (3) To identify areas of significant erosion within the catchment and to measure the sediment yield from these areas to the reservoir. To provide background knowledge, data collected from various sources is presented in this report. The data includes rainfall, river flow and sediment discharge. Suggestions on how to improve and continue the data collection network are included.

To assess the prospects for development of small agricultural watersheds in the semi-arid tropics there should be a clear idea of potential for cooperation by small groups of farmers. Cooperation would be particularly important if development included collection of runoff water on a catchment and use of the water on upland crops by several farmers. Cases of shared use of wells in southern, semi-arid tropical India are compared with results of literature studies and on-farm research. A basic distinction between rule-based cooperation and decision-based cooperation, is suggested.
