The paper discusses the design of tubewell distribution systems using buried pipe, particularly buried P. V. C. pipe. With the notable reduction in cost of P. V. C. resin in recent years, the major advantages of buried pipe distribution have become available at attractive cost levels. The paper takes as an example the buried pipe system being installed in a major public tubewells project in Uttar Pradesh in northern India, a first stage of which was financed by the World Bank. Negotiations for a second larger stage, probably to be financed jointly by the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development are in progress. The writer, a senior Irrigation Engineer with the FAO/World Bank Cooperative Programme, was closely involved with the development of the technology adopted. The paper goes on to discuss the prospects for application of buried pipe for smaller private wells, and for pumped-lift and gravity canal irrigation systems. Indicative costs for typical installations are given.
