Basing the irrigation water charge on farmland water supply cost is a desirable method to help the management agencies improve the irrigation operation conditions, prevent the irrigation project from deterioration, enhance the project benefits, carry out water saving and realize a better cycle of irrigation projects. Taking the water charge method based on farmland water supply costs (referred to as the Water Charge Method here- after) in the Limin Irrigation District of Shanxi Province as a case study, the present paper deals with the significance of the method as well as its related basic conditions and the results achieved. This study is of considerable significance for gravity irrigated districts which are planning to implement this Water Charge Method.
