This study is concerned with the evaluation of medium scale irrigation projects under the 2nd IBRD loan. The objectives of the study were to analyze economic efficiency of irrigation projects, to evaluate economic and social impacts, to promote the effectiveness of investment and to derive future directions and policy implications in irrigation systems development. Among the 36 areas of the 2nd IBRD loan irrigation projects, 5 areas where the projects were already completed and have experienced farming with irrigation projects were chosen for this post-evaluation study. Sample projects consists of four pumping stations and one reservoir. A total of 300 farm households and 15 villages in the project districts were randomly selected for the study. The data were also collected from the respective four Farm Land Improvement Associations (FLIAs). The results of the survey with villages, farm households and the FLIAs were analyzed and compared with the data in case of without the Irrigation project conditions.

Improvements in rice growing technologies during the last two decades have resulted in a number of countries especially in the humid tropical regions of Asia, nearing self sufficiency in rice production. Consequently, policies are shifting in these countries toward minimizing the under-utilization of land by increasing the cropping intensity of irrigated areas, particularly by growing non-rice crops during the dry season. These workshop papers discuss the advantages of and constraints to crop diversification, in different country situations in Asia.
