The rapid expansion of microcomputer technology provides a tool which can improve irrigation management practices. Commercially available software packages such as database management systems (DBMS), spreadsheets, mapping systems, and programming languages can greatly improve data storage, retrieval, analysis and reporting. From the authors' experience in India, computer-assisted irrigation management can also be developed using this technology. It provides an organized and comprehensive set of tools to improve information flows and assist irrigation managers in making timely and effective management decisions.
