In arid and semi-arid regions of the Mediterranean, soil salinity and water logging are the major problems leading to important losses in irrigated agriculture. The scarcity in available fresh water resources, the intention to reduce the share of this source allocated to agriculture and its compensation by using waters of marginal qualities imply the setting of new strategies for a sustainable land and water use in the region. Our knowledge, if appropriately applied, could cope with many of the salinity problems; however, there are many aspects of salinity still misunderstood and which require further technologies to be developed. This review article attempts to analyse the salinity problems in the Mediterranean region as well as the major issues which are relevant to the use and management of saline water focusing on the activities of CIHEAM-MAI Bari in this regard.
