Although irrigation projects have contributed substantially to improve paddy yield in Sri Lanka, most of the large scale projects today are faced with the salinity problem. The objective of this study was to investigate the economic feasibility of correcting the problem of salinity in a selected irrigation project, namely Inginimitiya scheme in the dry zone. The total area under this project is about 2700 ha and each farmer is given about one ha of land to cultivate paddy. Fifteen blocks were selected randomly and field measurements were taken to study the severity of the problem. Two approaches (a) Effect on Productivity and (b) Preventive Expenditure, were used to assess the economic viability of the alternatives to correct this problem. Results indicate that the present value of the losses due to salinity in the project is about Rs.21 million whereas the preventive expenditures are about Rs.15, 28, 14 and 12 million for the four options analyzed. Out of all the options tested, the improvement of the conventional drainage system was found to be the most economical solution in correcting the salinity problem. Therefore future preventive measures for the salinity problem in the Inginimitiya scheme should also include improvement of drainage canals in the operation and maintenance activities.
