Supplemental irrigation water is necessary for the production of high quality agricultural crops. Growers in Suffolk County, New York have traditionally irrigated according to weather conditions, crop appearance and their own individual experience. The USDA, Soil Conservation Service with assistance from the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Michigan State University have developed a computer program to assist growers with more accurate scheduling of irrigation water (Martin 1990). The SCS in cooperation with the Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District (SCSWCD) have implemented a comprehensive irrigation water management program utilizing this program. A description of this program and a summary of the results are presented.
