Two approaches are discussed for evaluating the economic and environmental effects of farming systems designed to protect water quality. The scenario approach evaluates specific farming system and the optimization approach uses mathematical models to select efficient farming systems for achieving specific improvements in environmental quality. A mathematical programming model is developed which can be used to determine the farming systems which maximize total net farm income in a watershed subject to a limit on annual sediment yield from the watershed. The model allows sediment delivery to be stochastic.
