An approach to assess the performance of irrigation water management in large schemes with satellite data, digital georeferenced maps and hydrological models is presented. Three performance indicators are proposed which express quantitatively the performance of the irrigation scheme on the basis of different water allocation policies: 1. Equity. Water allocation policy: the volume of water applied to one ha of a specific tertiary unit divided by the volume of water applied to one ha in the whole secondary unit. 2. Matching water requirements. Water allocation policy: the volume of water needed in a certain unit divided by the volume that is actually applied. 3.Effectiveness (or marginal benefit). Water allocation policy: the difference in actual evapotranspiration within a tertiary unit in situations with and without irrigation divided by the volume that is applied to that unit.
