As a general rule, maintenance works constitute from 50 to 60% of the total O&M budget of irrigation schemes in Argentina. This proportion is even higher in large irrigation schemes that are well equipped. Sediment extraction, weed control and equipment maintenance between them account for more than 90% of the maintenance costs. To achieve efficient use of water in the irrigated oasis of the mid-west of Argentina, planned maintenance of irrigation and drainage channels is required. Economic evaluation of alternatives needs to be a standard working tool.
