A guide for the investigation, development, and management of groundwater resources. This manual has been prepared as a guide to field personnel in the more practical aspects and commonly encountered problems of groundwater investigations, development and management. Information is presented concerning such aspects as groundwater occurrence and flow, well- aquifer relationships, groundwater investigations, aquifer test analysis, estimating aquifer yield, data collection, and geophysical investigations. In addition, permeability tests, well design, dewatering systems, well specifications and drilling, well sterilization, pumps, and other aspects have been discussed. An extensive bibliography is also included.

Examines the social, technical, and economic aspects of the massive investment in groundwater development in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Describes many of the physical parameters of the two systems which rely heavily on tube wells in order to focus on government policy concerning groundwater development and documents the economic and social impacts of the policies. The first two sections detail groundwater development and management in Pakistan and Bangladesh respectively. The final two sections discuss the social and economic impacts and the long-term implications of current policies. Lastly, the author draws some conclusions that may be used by the two countries, or other countries, as they expand groundwater development in the future.

The paper discusses the design of tubewell distribution systems using buried pipe, particularly buried P. V. C. pipe. With the notable reduction in cost of P. V. C. resin in recent years, the major advantages of buried pipe distribution have become available at attractive cost levels. The paper takes as an example the buried pipe system being installed in a major public tubewells project in Uttar Pradesh in northern India, a first stage of which was financed by the World Bank. Negotiations for a second larger stage, probably to be financed jointly by the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development are in progress. The writer, a senior Irrigation Engineer with the FAO/World Bank Cooperative Programme, was closely involved with the development of the technology adopted. The paper goes on to discuss the prospects for application of buried pipe for smaller private wells, and for pumped-lift and gravity canal irrigation systems. Indicative costs for typical installations are given.
