The Province of Alberta has a mandatory land irrigability classification system. Land must be classified as suitable for irrigation before water can be issued. The system has six land classes of which the first four are irrigable. The Canadian Soil Classification System is used for describing soils which, together with parent material, soil profile, textual classes, soil chemistry and landscape features determine the limitations and the irrigability class. The system has developed over a number of years and the latest revision dates from 1983.
