Water management activities within the National Irrigation Administration are outlined, with special emphasis on those adopted by the Upper Pampanga River Project. This project, not yet complete, will have reservoir storage for the dry season crop. The system of rotational irrigation being implemented in the project area is described, and its problems are discussed. The problems include improving the effective use of rain water, and organizing and educating farmers for more efficient water use. The findings are supported with water-use data from a pilot area.

The book reviews alternative approaches to pre-sanction appraisal of irrigation projects such as those suggested by the Second Irrigation Commission, the World Bank and UNIDO. Details of alternative methodologies and social benefit cost analysis (SBCA) of various technical alternatives have been presented by using the Auranga Reservoir Project in Bihar as an illustration. A computer programme in Fortran 1V has been included as a useful tool for performing necessary appraisals and sensitivity analysis.

As part of a programme of collaborative research to study sedimentation in East Java, Indonesia, reservoir surveys were undertaken in 1977 and 1982 by the Hydraulics Research Station. This report describes the methods employed during the surveys and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method. With the field experience gained it is now possible to justify the double sextant angle method of survey, used in 1982, as giving reliable results for use in sediment volume calculations. Recommendations for the use of appropriate electronic distance measuring equipment in future surveys are made. The application of programmable calculators is also recommended using programs given in this report.
