Global Data Manager operates as a dedicated spreadsheet. It provides easy access to large libraries of data stored in the accompanying disks. The user can analyze and compare data using a variety of functions, such as: sort and compare up to 200 variables at once; perform mathematical computations; create percentage bar graphs; add new data and compare with existing data; locate any country on a distortion free map; convert units of measurement; and correlate any two variables. The results may be exported to spreadsheet, mapping or statistical software or output to printer or disk. Each data disk contains over 100 different variables for every country in the world, on topics such as demographics, food, military, energy, environment, health, natural resources and economics. Disks include: Indicators of world social development 1992, Basic world data disk 1990 and Global data manager (v.2.3).

FAOSTAT-PC contains an up-to-date collection of time series data on agriculture, population, land use, production, food aid, fisheries, forestry and nutrition from 210 countries and territories. The various databases can be consulted, using English, French or Spanish as the working languages. A User Manual accompanies the 14 diskettes. The complete set occupies 28 Mb of hard disk - about 320,000 time series. The data can be converted to ASCII or most common spreadsheet format files.

This working paper gives an overview of the available global datasets on irrigated areas and an evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses. From these analyses an outline on how to develop a global irrigated area map, based on a generic methodology, is be presented. Some examples are given for the area covering India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. These countries offer a broad range of irrigated areas in different environmental settings, ranging from deserts to humid tropics
