It has been shown the meaning of supplementary irrigation in arid and semiarid areas; criteria to establish when to irrigate with supplementary irrigation are described; supplementary irrigated main crops and their yield responses are outlined. Some considerations on irrigation methods usable for supplementary irrigation are reported.
