Assessment of water yield in a basin is basic to the design and operation of an irrigation project. Very often the streamflow data series are not available for making such an assessment. Under such circumstances stream flow records can be generated by transforming the rainfall records, which are usually available into runoff using some appropriate models. The models employed for such purpose vary from empirical models to conceptual water balance models. A comparison between the performance of an empirical model and a water balance model is attempted in the present paper.

A simple conceptual model of field soil water balance is proposed and tested with actual field data obtained from an irrigation project area located in Thar desert of India. The model estimates, for each day of the growing season, the root depth, soil moisture content and actual evapotranspiration. The simulated results closely agrees with the observed one. Therefore the model can be usefully incorporated into large computer based irrigation management models.

A computer simulation model is developed to help the manager or engineer in evaluating the operation of an irrigation project. The model evaluates proposed operation plan and if the results are not acceptable the plans are modified and model rerun. The model is simple to use and adapted to personal computers.

Efficient water management is fast becoming more important as water multipurpose uses increases. Scheduling and determining of irrigation water applications are important considerations given limited water resources and increasing concern about agricultural productivity. Although considerable effort has been devoted in the last two decades to refine the traditional techniques of irrigation scheduling, there is still room for an increased understanding on how the involved physical processes interact and effect the irrigation schedules and their measure of performance. The paper highlights irrigation scheduling techniques and some practical considerations and gives guidelines for future research in the Indian context.

The paper reviews the state of the art information on the effects of afforestation/deforestation and other soil conservation generally adopted in a drainage basin. Majority of watersheds reported are either experimental or small sized. Modelling inadequacies are also discussed and a case study is presented.
